  Chapter One

  Gina

“I want to hold my godson!” I squealed and ran towards my best friend, Harmony, as soon as she stepped into the airport terminal.

“Hold on, Luke’s sleeping!” Harmony tried to hold out her hand, but I was already pulling Luke out of the baby carrier before she could stop me.

“Wake up, little man. Your godmother wants to see those beautiful blue eyes.” I held Luke against my chest and cooed.

“Waah!” Luke opened his eyes and immediately started to scream.

“See, you should have let him sleep.” Harmony chuckled and walked past me.

“Wait, I think he wants his mommy!” I hurried after her.

“Nah, he’s screaming for his godmother. You woke him up.” She waved me off with her hand and kept walking.

It had been almost a year since I had seen Harmony or my beautiful godson, Luke, outside of FaceTime or Skype. The last time I got to see either of them in the flesh was the night she gave birth to her bundle of joy. I had been begging her to come visit me in Chicago because my job was too hectic for me to leave for longer than a couple of days, and she finally had. I couldn’t wait to spend time with her and get to know my godson.

I carried Luke to the baggage claim area and when he was finally calm, Harmony put him back in his baby carrier. It was a short walk to the parking lot, and once Luke was secured, we drove towards my apartment.

“So tell me about the guys—how’s married life?” I looked over at Harmony with a smile.

“It’s—well, I guess you could say it’s very interesting.” Harmony turned her head towards me and nodded.

Harmony didn’t have a traditional relationship and her marriage was nothing more than a document. She shared her bed with not just one man, but three. I nearly fell out of my high heels when she told me about her unique situation, but after getting to know her harem of gorgeous men, I knew they all cared deeply for my best friend. I didn’t care if it was a relationship that the world would consider unconventional—I just wanted her to be happy. Truthfully, I had never seen her happier. She was glowing so much she was practically radiant. There was a certain jealousy that lingered below the surface, but it wasn’t malicious in any way. I couldn’t find one guy that I trusted enough to pursue a relationship with, and she had three that were committed to her for life.

As we drove towards my apartment, Harmony filled me in on her life in New York, living with three men and a baby. It really did sound spectacular and she had everything she could possibly want. She was living a modern day fairy tale, complete with a happily ever after that made me almost salivate. If the three men tending to every need wasn’t enough, she also had the most amazing baby in the world—even if he did cry when I picked him up. I could forgive that if he gave me plenty of cuddles when we got back to my apartment. I was so excited to have the two of them visiting me that I practically grinned nonstop for the entire drive.

“So, did you ever call Angelina?” Harmony looked over at me when we pulled into the parking garage under my apartment building.

“No.” I shook my head back and forth. “I don’t know—maybe I’m just scared. I know it worked out great for you, but I’m not sure I could handle the kind of relationship you have.”

“Who says you’ll have a relationship like mine? She’s helped plenty of people connect with their one true soulmate.” Harmony put her hand on the door once the car came to a stop.

“I just—ugh.” I slumped forward and pulled my key out of the ignition. “I always thought it would happen naturally. I don’t know what I would do if she told me there was more than one guy out there for me.”

“You follow your heart and let it lead the way.” Harmony shrugged and opened the car door.

Angelina was a strange anomaly that wandered into Harmony’s life on the day of sister’s wedding and turned her world upside down. Angelina didn’t come alone either—she brought a man named Nate from Harmony’s past that was eager to reconnect with her. Harmony thought things were going great until Angelina told her that Nate wasn’t the only guy that was destined to be with her. Harmony hadn’t shared all the details with me, but Angelina seemed to be very good at her job. Before she united Harmony with her harem, she owned a place in New York called Club Infinite Fantasy. It catered to helping people fulfill their ultimate fantasy and if the person was willing, she helped them find the person—or people—that they were meant to spend the rest of their lives with.

It wasn’t just smoke and mirrors, either. Angelina managed to get her hands on some hacked software that was once used to create an app called Soulmate. The app made national news when it launched because it used some sort of fancy computer algorithm to unite people with their one true love—allegedly. The original design prevented people from being matched if they were already married or otherwise engaged, but a cracked version was released by a hacker group a few months after it launched. The scandal forced the company to pull the app and it was soon forgotten, save a few lawsuits that the company had to fend off. Angelina believed that the hacked version was the authentic version, and based on her success rate, she seemed to be onto something. I just wasn’t sure it was right for me. Truth be told, I was a little scared of finding out who my soulmate really was.

What if he’s a serial killer or some kind of pervert? Would that doom me to spend eternity alone? People managed just fine before they had a computer to tell them who they were supposed to spend their lives with.

Harmony and I spent the night reminiscing about our time in Bakersfield, the small town where we grew up. Luke was finally eating real food instead of drinking breast milk, so she was ready to have a drink, and we plowed through wine like we were still in college once Luke was in bed. Harmony told me more about her wonderful life with her three men as the wine coursed through our veins. The wine made me brave enough to ask about the sex. I didn’t know if she spent one night with each guy, or if there was some sort of schedule. I was flabbergasted to learn that most of her nights were spent with all three of them. I blushed when she told me, even though I was fairly intoxicated.

“Okay, it’s time for bed.” I sat my wine glass on the table and started to stand.

  “It’s
Friday night. We used to stay up all night when were in college!” Harmony giggled and put her wine glass beside mine.

“I know, but work is a bitch. I’m surprised I made it to eleven.” I waved and walked towards my bedroom.

  Monday morning

“Gina, I have a new assignment for you.” A curvy blonde named Jessica walked up to my desk and dropped a file in front of me.

“What’s this?” I opened the folder and started flipping through the papers.

“The bosses want you to do a little legwork today. You still remember how to do that, right—or has this desk gotten too comfortable?” She smirked and pointed at the file. “It’s a new development the bosses are really interested in acquiring.”

“No, I haven’t been behind this desk that long. I’ll check it out.” I nodded quickly and turned my attention to the paperwork in front of me.

I flipped through the file and groaned to myself. Harmony was still in town, and we were supposed to meet for some shopping after I got off work. The assignment Jessica gave me was going to make that impossible. My bosses tasked me with scouting out some new property they had their eyes on, and they wanted a full report by morning. That meant I would be up half the night making sure the report was perfect—after I got done scouting it. I hadn’t been working at Viking Developments long enough to complain, especially after receiving a nice promotion at the end of my six month orientation period. I thought my days of scouting new properties was over once they put me behind a desk, but that didn’t seem to be the case.

I’m not even important enough for them to hand me my assignment directly—they send everything through Jessica.

My bosses were two brothers named Erik and Olsen Rourke. They were as attractive as they were intimidating. I hadn’t seen very much of them since they shot questions at me in rapid succession when I was hired, which was a shame considering how hot they were. Both brothers had a powerful frame, gorgeous blond hair that hung down to their shoulders and ice-blue eyes. According to office legend, they named the company Viking Developments because they were literally descended from Vikings. They definitely looked the part. Most of the girls in the office talked openly about their wishes to be pillaged and plundered by the Rourke brothers. Perhaps that was why they were so elusive to begin with. Productivity definitely dropped when they were on our floor because they were incredibly distracting.

  Later that day

“I’m really sorry!” I walked up to Harmony and sighed. “I really wanted to show you all the nice places downtown, but I don’t have long.”

“It’s okay, really. We have several more days. Plus, you still have to eat right? We can have a quick dinner and you can fill me in on this super important project your hot bosses assigned you.” Harmony grinned and motioned for me to follow her into the restaurant.

“I wish it was important.” I held the door so she could carry Luke inside the restaurant and then quickly requested a table. “It’s just grunt work.”

“Clearly they wanted the best grunt to handle this.” Harmony giggled as our waitress walked up and motioned for us to follow her.

“Maybe.” I sat down across from Harmony and waved my hand in front of Luke, who smiled so wide my heart melted. “It doesn’t look like much, though. I’m checking out a place called Hal’s Pub on the South Side. They want to buy it and a couple of the buildings on the block.”

“This whole gentrification thing doesn’t make sense to me. Why go into poor neighborhoods and buy property when there is so much undeveloped land out there?” Harmony stared at me with a bewildered look.

“It’s some twisted form of nostalgia. At least, that is what my bosses believe. Take an area that has been decimated with poverty and crime—turn it into a hipster paradise.” I shrugged and picked up the menu. “People certainly seem to love it, except the people that can’t afford to live there, I guess. Luckily, Viking Developments pays them more than the property is worth.”

“If it works, I guess you gotta go with it.” Harmony nodded and scanned her menu.

“Yeah, I’ll just be up all night writing this stupid report because it has to be on their desk tomorrow morning.” I sighed and shook my head.

“Maybe they’ll want you to hand it to them personally.” Harmony batted her eyelashes and grinned. “Then you can stumble over your words like you did during your interview.”

“Yeah, that was a disaster. I’m surprised they gave me the job. Seriously though, I showed you their picture on the company website. How would you feel if you were getting interviewed by two guys that looked like they were going to raid a village after lunch?” I chuckled as I remembered my awkwardness during the interview.

“If I wasn’t married—probably hope I was in that village!” She batted her eyelashes again.

“Now you sound like the girls at the office.” I rolled my eyes and laughed.

  Two hours later

I spent as much time with Harmony and Luke as I could before I had to hug them goodbye and head to the South Side of Chicago. There wasn’t much about the area that was ascetically appealing, but Hal’s Pub seemed to be in an area that was borderline decent. I parked my car and looked around the area. The two buildings that sat next to it appeared to be abandoned, so I didn’t think my bosses would have much trouble acquiring them. Hal’s Pub didn’t look like it was suffering in the least. I stepped inside and was immediately hit by the rancid smell of cigarette smoke mixed with stale beer. The locals were enjoying themselves, even if the pub smelled like a cesspool. I walked to a table in the corner where I had a good view and sat down, quickly looking around the room as I waited for a drink.

I guess it could be turned into a decent bar with the right amount of money behind the renovations, but it would require some work. It doesn’t seem to be very special, that’s for sure.

“Fancy meeting a girl like you in a place like this.” A woman walked up to my table started pulling out a chair. “Mind if I join you?”

“Angelina!” My voice raised, but I quickly lowered it. “What the hell are you doing here?”

“Just like you—I’m getting a drink.” She sat down at my table and smiled.

“Did Harmony send you? What the hell?” I glared at her with a mixture of confusion and anger.

“Harmony has nothing to do with this.” Angelina shook her head back and forth. “I gave you my card and you haven’t used it. I decided to come find out why you’ve been avoiding me.”

“There’s no way—you….” I hesitated when the waitress brought our drinks and put them on the table. “You just decided to track me down while Harmony was visiting? That seems a little too inconvenient.”

“The events are not connected.” Angelina picked up her gin and tonic. “Obviously I know she’s in Chicago, but I’m here on other business.”

“What kind of business?” I tilted my head suspiciously.

“I’ll fill you in later, but for now—let’s just focus on you.” Angelina put down her glass and smiled. “You see that guy over there behind the bar?”

“Yeah, what about him?” I looked over her shoulder and nodded.

“He’s going to come over here and ask you out on a date. You would be a fool to say no.” She leaned back and smiled.

“What? He’s a bartender in a shitty pub. Why would I go out on a date with him?” I shook my head and waved her off.

“Because, my dear…” Angelina chuckled. “It’s time for your Infinite Fantasy to begin—whether you want it or not.”

“I didn’t call you. If I wanted your help, I would have picked up the phone.” I looked at the guy again.

He’s certainly attractive, even if he does look he could murder me as easily as he could kiss me.

“His name is Joaquin, and you’re going to get along great.” Angelina reached for her glass and nodded.

  Oh god—he’s walking this way.

  Chapter Two

  Joaquin

  Earlier that day

I gave you a key so you could lock up when you left, old man, not so you could spend the night.” I walked up to the white haired man sleeping face down on his arms and slapped the bar with my hand.

“What? Oh—hey, Joaquin. Can I get a whiskey?” Charlie lifted his head slowly and pointed at his empty glass.

“Your wife still won’t let you in the door after midnight?” I stepped behind the bar and picked up my bottle of cheapest whiskey—it was all Charlie drank.

“It’s worse, Joaquin.” Charlie grunted and eagerly downed the glass when I put it on front of him. “She said I have to choose between the whiskey and her—obviously, I’m still thinking about it.”

“How long have you been married now? Forty years?” I started refilling his glass.

  “Forty-five.” He chuckled proudly.

“And you’re going to throw that away because you don’t want to stop hanging out with me every night?” I refilled his glass again and put it in front of him.

“You gave me a key, she took mine away. Maybe this is where I belong.” He tilted the second glass back and emptied it into his throat.

“Man, I just didn’t want you to hurt someone on your way to your next DUI.” I groaned and leaned against the bar. “I didn’t want you to move in.”
